Cell Proliferating Activity in Tumor and Nontumor Portion of the Liver in Patient with Hepatocellular Carcinoma and its Relationship to Prognostic Parameters

Abstract
The expression rate of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was measured by immunohistochemical stain and G2M+S phase fraction by flow cytometry with 10% formalin fixed and paraffin embedded tissues in 25 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma,
19
cases
of nontumor portion of hepatocellular carcinoma and 29 specimens of the normal control liver tissue obtained from partial hepatectomy to evaluate the differences of each groups and the relationship to the prognostic paraeters. In the
hepatocellular
carcinoma, prognostic parameters such as age, sex, histologic differentiation, mitosis, and tumor size were analyzed.
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN 1. The PCNA expression in nontumor portion of hepatocellular carcinom patient increased significantly compared with benign hepatocytes of nontumor patients (P=0.0051).
2. The proliferating indices of hepatocellular carcinoma, nontumor portion of carcinoma and control tissue revealed significant differences (P=0.0392).
3. In hepatocellular carcinoma tissue, G2M fraction was significantly related to S phase fraction (P=0.0019).
4. In hepatoallular carcinoma tissue, pCNA expression was significantly related to tumor size (P=0.0049) and to mitosis (P=0.0441).
5. In hepatocellular carcinoma tissue, histologic differentiation was significantly related to mitosis (P=0.0054), but sex and differentiation, sex and tumor size and tumor size and differentiation are not significantly related.
We conclude that the individual prognostic parameters of mitosis, histologic differentiation grade, tumor size, PCNA expression rate, G2M and S phase fraction obtained from hepatocellular carci noma patients may preduct possible proliferative
capacity
of individual tumor tissues and there are significant interrelationship between some of these parameters.
